Anyone in Springfield have any knowledge about Marguerite "Aunt Peggy" Trask? She never married. Her face, particularly her chin and nose, was disfigured when she fell into a fire as a child. She was a good friend of my grandparents and would like to know more about her family.

Hello!
Is this site still monitored?
If it is, and anyone is able to help, I am looking for information on Thomas Smith, originally from Nova Scotia, who would lived in Springfield from 1850 (or before), until his death in about 1879. He was a blacksmith, according to the 1860 census, and his wife was Joanna. Any help would be most welcome!!

I am looking for the burial location of:
Hiram Oakes Chase 1843 - 1921
and his wife Mary Ann (Dwelley) Chase 1845 - 1918
I created memorials on findagrave.com thinking they are in the Mills Cemetery but I am not certain. Hiram's death record says he was buried in South Springfield or Lowater Mills Cemetery. Mary Ann's says she is buried in the Corner Cemetery. He has parents and siblings buried in South Springfield but I could not find stones for him and Mary Ann. She has siblings buried in the Mills Cemetery. I am pretty certain Hiram and Mary Ann would be buried in same location. I live in California and won't be back in Maine anytime soon to check.

I am a descendant of Jeremiah Merrill who was an early settler of Springfield. He was at the Town Meeting when Springfield became a Town. Later they went to Kossuth and then Grand Lake Stream. My great grandfather Jerry Merrill went to Lee Academy. Grandfather Leonard Merrill was born in Grand Lake Stream. I have been collecting Springfield items for years and have an extensive collection of photo, letters, and ephemera of various kinds. I would be happy to look for items in my collection if requested.

I know where the house was from old real photo postcard I have. Here is some description of what I have. 3 notebooks full of items. 30 or 40 Butterfield family papers, real photo postcards of Springfield and South Springfield, North Penobscot Fair and Springfield Fair postcards, miscellaneous letters, advertising items from Springfield businesses, postal pieces, business correspondence, autograph albums, real photos of people, hand drawn map, names like Burr, Trask, Pratt, Dr. Briggs, Bailey, schoolhouse record book, Butterfield Photography, Dr. Bert Jewett, John Sherman who was in the Civil War (military papers), letter petitioning for a Town Meeting and another requesting a road be laid out by the county I believe. I have a lot of Lee items, too in other binderbooks. I used to talk with Gail Rae in Lee before she passed away and have visited the Lee Historical Society building several times. It is a real treasure.
My family left the area about 1910. The Merrills in the area are generally all relatives but no one close enough for me to know.
I showed my collection several years ago (2012) to Buckshot Ham when it was much smaller than it is now. He was amazed at what I had collected. He helped me put my photos in the right place in town and explained how things used to be.
I am happy to help anyone I can.

If you had any references to or photos that might include Thomas Smith, who was blacksmith in Springfield between about 1853 and his death in 1879, or his son, Theodore, who was in the area 1853-1873 (and who served in the 24th Maine), also blacksmith, I would be grateful.

I live in North Yarmouth near Portland.

I have some early 1900's photos of South Springfield. I believe they were taken to become postcards but I don't think they were.1909 Mills Street Lower Village is one.I have a real photo of a moose in So. Springfield in 1907. Some I know are Springfield but the exact location I don't know. North Penobscot Fair in Springfield postcards are 3-1920 fair premium payment cards sent by I. A. Averill sent to Lucy Bailey, Blanche Juch, and Lucy Banford. 2 1908 cards saying souvenier from the Springfield Fair. Also one from 1907.

Harry Lewis autograph album from 1896-1900(few names), Miss Lura Lewiss 1886 Springfield Normal School autograph album (lots of local people), a pocket diary from 1800s, school ledger starts in the 1850s and in District 9 shared with Lee ( i think I copied this for Lee Historical Society once). In 1884 a Lombard is the Clerk of the District.

And a whole lot more. I still actively collect Springfield (Lee, too), Kossuth. I am happy to share what I know which may not be much as I don't live there and I am happy to add to my collection.

You do not have a Historical Society, correct? Buckshot thought I had a good collection.`

Hi Lincoln,

I have a hobby of research my family history. Jeremiah Merrill, born in New Gloucester and died in Springfield, was my third great grandfather. His wife was Priscilla Atwood. His son, also named Jeremiah, was my second great grandfather I think born in Springfield and relocated to Kossuth (Topsfield/Carrol) with his wife Nancy Leighton of Jonesport. Do you have specific information, documents, photos or sketches, or any other goodies about these folks? I currently live in Kansas City MO, but I grew up in New England and spend much time at my grandfather Harry Merrill's camp on East Musquash Lake in Topsfield. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks so much. Dennis

Dennis,
We are the same line. Jeremiah and Priscilla and Jeremiah and Nancy are my direct line. After that it goes Jerry Merrill who married Annie Forbes of Weston, their son Leonard who was born at Grand Lake Stream, their son Lincoln born on New Haven, Connecticut and then me.

Nancy's father was Eli Leighton (Deacon). They are all buried in the Corner Cemetery in Springfield. My wife's great grandfather made Jeremiah's headstone that is in that cemetery (looks like the Washington Monument). He was a stone carver in Calais, ME.

The first Jeremiah was a Universalist by faith. The first Jeremiah was also at the meeting when Springfield became a town. I have a map where I indicated the lots they owned in town.

I have photos from Jerry on but not the generations before.
Priscilla was from New Gloucester, also.

Dennis Joseph Merrill
2/14/2020 03:10:52 pm

Thanks for the quick response. Our lines diverged when Jerry went to GrandLake Stream and my great grandfather Evelyn Atwood Merrill went south to Lincoln and then to Lewiston. Interesting my dad also wound up in New Haven, Milford, and Bridgeport.

Do you have any genealogical documentation on the family? Any idea how Jeremiah and Priscilla navigated their way north from New Gloucester to Springfield? Or why Jeremiah Jr. and Nancy moved to Kossuth? Had Nancy's family been among the early setters of Springfield, perhaps moving there from Jonesport? My research suggests that neither of our great grandfathers inherited the farm in Kossuth. My grandfather often spoke fondly of his Uncle Finn -- did Phineas inherit the farm? I have a childhood memory of my grandfather taking me to the family homestead, somewhere west of East Musquash Lake on the way to Carroll, to pick berries and apples.

Hi Lincoln,

Many thanks for the info on the Merrill's of Springfield and northeast Maine. I have so many fond memories of Washington and Penobscot counties from my childhood. I doubt I'll make it back that way any time soon, but I actually still have dreams of hiking through the woods, reeling in trout, and swatting mosquitos. You wouldn't happen to have any info on Jeremiah's father John Merrill and his first wife Anna (Unknown) and second wife Ann Whitney of New Gloucester would you? It's a long shot but I thought I'd try.
All best wishes,
Dennis

I do not have photos of them that I know of. I have a few photos taken at Butterfield's Studio in Springfield but the people are not identified.
Yesterday I got a 1908-09 Springfield Normal School catalogue. Torrey is listed as a senior in that school. Madeline Ava Merrill is in the Special Class. I don't know what the Special Class is but 10 of the 56 students are in it. The school is the one on Clarks Hill that is in the postcards so often.

Across the road is a cape cod house with what appears to be a "V" on the roof over the door. An unusual feature that very few had. It is obscured by trees so this is what I think it is. The front is to the road photo is taken from and the gables are parallel to the road.

Just above the cape cod, a road comes in and on the other corner (same right side of street) is what appears to be a one room schoolhouse, town house, or church vestry. Gable end to the side road. The nest set of buildings up the road on the right has a large unpainted barn and a house beyond it. On the same side as the blacksmith shop there is a barn way in the distance. There are telephone poles on the blacksmith shop side of the road but there are horses and carriages in photo, no automobiles.

Mean anything? It could be a carriage maker, too, I suppose. Only sign that I can see is one for Swastica oils and greases. There is a man (owner?) in the door but he is hard to see. Young girl next to road near him.

They left New Gloucester and went to Sumner, Me for a while. I don't know the Butterfield genealogy line but they were in Sumner, too, and were prominent in Springfield. I suspect somehow they must have encouraged the Merrills to go there.

New Gloucester was a Town that at one time where the Court met for part of the year so a lot of prominent people were there. The residents seemed to move to new areas of the State like around Williamsburgh, Willimantic, etc. Also to Foxcroft.

Yes, the Leighton were early settlers but not as early as the Town founding I don't think, but not too long afterwards.

I am not sure why they went to Kossuth but before New Gloucester they had been in North Yarmouth and in Massachusetts proper before then. Itchy feet! They settled that place and got it organized and became Selectmen and School Board members like they were in NG, and Grand Lake, and like my Dad and I were here in North Yarmouth. It is in the blood!
They went to Grand Lake when it was being set up and Leonard and his brother Emmons were born there. Jerry was a timber cruiser and Maine guide. A wealthy family he guided for offered him a job in MA so they moved away to Fitchburg MA and then Newark, NJ.

I don't know who got the farm but it was not us. Phineas is buried in the Corner Cemetery in Springfield. His stone is there near the front. He was a twin with a sister Minnie. He was not a Springfield resident I don't think.

During the Depression, Grandpa Leonard and Grandma Lois Merrill moved to Weston and then Danforth where they lived a few years before going back to CT. My Dad was 6 months old when they moved there. They rented from the Scanlins on Rt 1 in Weston.

This is quite interesting: my connection to Springfield is through Sumner as well.
Theodore Harding Smith, the son blaksmith (he left for Nova Scotia in about 1873) married Ann Maria Bowker, nee Keene, who had rejoined her father, Shadrach Keene, who was an early pioneer in the Springfield-Lee area.
It's actually quite a tale. Happy to share it if you send me an email:

I also have a good map with all the inhabitants of Springfield from the 1880s I can send you.

Dennis,
The Merrill Memorial is a good book for family genealogy. What would you like to know about John Merrill? I live 2 miles from the New Gloucester town line and am good friends with the Town Historian there. The Merrill house is only about 4 or 5 miles from my house. Merrills were early settlers in New Gloucester, too. One part of the family joined the United Society of Shakers. I think our line went from Congregationalists to Universalists in New Gloucester. The New Gloucester Universalist records are missing or destroyed but our Merrill line did not join the Congregational Church there and Jeremiah was a Universalist when he died in Springfield/Kossuth.

Hi Lincoln,

Yes, Samuel Merrill's work was masterful! Still, there are gaps in my line. It would be fabulous if you had time to check into some questions I have on Jeremiah's dad - John.
First, I'm trying to identify his first wife. Her first name was Anna (not to be confused with his second wife Ann Whitney). But I can't document her last name. A few family trees online have her as Anna Tappan (or Tappon) but don't cite any sources. A couple have her as Anna Hammond. Online trees can get pretty messed up as people use info without sources.
Second, do we know if he served in the Revolutionary War? His father Samuel was involved in the ratification of the Constitution and Jeremiah's wife (Priscilla Atwood) had a dad in the war. But I haven't been able to positively id John as a veteran. Born in 1746 or so he would have been about the right age.
Third, your info on Jeremiah being a Universalist is interesting. I didn't know what that was (some of us Merrill's have lost our way over the generations I guess). But they sound really enlightened for that time. I wonder if John was also a Universalist?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. And of course there's no hurry. Whenever you happen over New Gloucester way it would be great if you could take a. moment to check.

Many, many thanks,
Dennis

A Merrill Memorial says is wife is Anna Evans Dec. 10, 1734 marriage date in Salisbury, MA. She is supposed to be buried in the Corner Cemetery in New Gloucester but all the stones from that time period are gone now. Samuel is there, too. One of the John's has Tappan for a middle name. He lived in Gray, Me I believe. Was a musician. The Merrills including Samuel were Congregationalists. When they got to New Gloucester, they never appeared in the Congregational Church records. The pastor at that church is active in the Historical Society so I am sure they were not members there. The Universalists believed in Universal salvation- all who accepted the gift of Jesus Christ could go to Heaven. They may have changed to get away from the then strict doctrine of the church.

Hello! Thank you everyone. I'm interested in the book because I'm curious if it makes any reference to my family. Thomas Smith was a blacksmith who arrived in Springfield about 1853. He was a widower with 2daughters, one son. He remarried in Springfield in 1860 to a Joanna Pike (nee Sullivan) who was the widow of Newel Pike, a blacksmith from down Calais way.
Just curious if any of those names appear in the book... Thanks!!!

I have a copy of the book as well. I have been in the records at the Town Hall but it has been a while. I wonder if they would let someone transcribe the meeting records so we could all access them?

Like you it's been awhile since I have looked at the records.and right now Springfield Town Office has been closed for at least 6wks and continues to be closed until further notice. because of this covid thing. But I know the selectmen and talk to them all the time. so out of curiosity I'll ask them about the transcribing. Is that something that you do or know of someone that does that?

I have done transcribing of old records, ledgers, and diaries from the 1800s in the past. It's a bit of a trick to read the names. I would be willing to come up there and do it if they are OK, with it. With COVID-19, I have lots of free time! I am on the Board of North Yarmouth Historical Society and used to be President of the Maine Historical Society so I have some experience. If they could be typed out, then the information could be shared in some format so everyone could use it. If I remember correctly, there are only a few books. Is that correct? I have a friend with a camp on Bottle Lake and one on Egg so I could probably get a place to stay when I came up. Let me know. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the 1860 census comes in sections. The Northern troops were already being mustered in and some census from 1860 falls under the unit commanders name if individuals have already enlisted in the service for the Civil War (War of the Rebellion).

I just acquired a real photo postcard of the Baptist Church at Springfield Mills mailed in October 1904 from Carroll to Miss Marian Payne in Farmington, Maine. Message says they will board at Dr. Lyford's this winter. The only view I had seen is in the Springfield book next to Ritchie's house. Anyone know how long it was there? Are there other photos of it? Thanks!

Can I see any pictures of the old Babtist Church in Springfield? When was it destroyed? Also some pictures maybe of the original Springfield settlement from up south.

I have no relatives to the area, but own the TreeHouse on Mill stream and the Blue house on the corner by 6 that we recently remodled. Im interested in finding the history of the area.

Im also interested if there is a way to save that house Where the Ritchies lived on Mill Stream. It really is a piece of history and it is just getting destroyed by the weather. I believe the bank owns it now. Is there a way to get it onto the historical registry for Maine?

Thanks
Heidi.

I have the photo of the church. I know the Blue House but have not been to Springfield since pre-COVID. There is a process to put things on the Registry which you can look up on line. I am not familiar with the condition of the house.
